An enchanting escape...

Winter blues anyone? I certainly am suffering a rather serious case of winter blues, laying in bed for the past three days with strep throat, bronchitis, a torn ligament and a slight fracture on my heel ... the joy of having to sport a cast for the next 2 months! What will I wear? Sorry, I am indeed whining, not very becoming I agree.

This last October, I found an enchanting island, somewhere in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Zanzibar, Pemba Island.

The only hotel/resort on the island, Fundu Lagoon, is designed to be totally integrated with nature, a jewel among a lush vegetation. Walking barefoot on fine sand is such a luxury, the service is superb, the staff very friendly, the food absolutely delicious, a relaxed atmosphere, the guests are pampered, sunset sails on the traditional dow, snorkeling or scuba diving on a deserted island. I was in paradise!

Designing: white on white

The pure bluish white glacier is an amazing sight in the midst of Kilimanjaro dry, drab rocky summit. Precious moments of beauty and rest in thin air, minutes away from the summit. I could not take my eyes away from such a marvelous sight.

My dear friend Linda O' Keeffe recently published a beautiful book "Brilliant": White in Design. In her words, "White always makes a statement. It is distinct, versatile and unparalleled; it is brilliant".

This led me to analyze my work and its reliance on the various shades of white.
The spectrum of white is so vast and offers limitless creative choices to the designer. White conjures a nostalgic, romantic ,soft charm but white is equally embraced by modern avant garde architects and designers. A pure white space will reflects and emphasizes the architecture to perfection.
In my work, I look at white with the eyes of a minimalist and inject my personal dose of eclectic elements, soft textiles, distressed antiques, ethnic objects, contemporary artworks to create a warm, welcoming environment.
I love both the pure brilliance of minimalist architecture as well as the coziness of a well lived white bedroom or living room for instance.

A white glass tiles bathroom I designed for a client's New York loft. The Master bath was so small, that following a complete gut job, I recaptured every inch of space. White gave the illusion of space, airiness and light.

No white Christmas in Connecticut this year. I long for snow, mountains and skiing.When I am asked to design ski houses, I tend to gravitate towards a warm comforting style, rich wood, comfortable furniture, spaces designed for all generations to enjoy, accommodating parents, grand parents, children and friends in a nurturing atmosphere, casual and carefree.

These are my vision and ideal spaces, would it be in the Alps, the Rockies, the Tetons or the Andes (my favorite ski haunts)

OMG it is close to 11am and am not even ready... A little too much champagne last night went straight to my head ... I really needed to end 2011with my favorite bubbles. The" By Invitation Only "girls...or ladies are meeting at the Pre Catalan restaurant for a welcome to 2012 luncheon. We will of course gossip,tell stories but also share our thoughts on going forward...

As always, I am running incredibly late. Showered, I will wear my hair in a simple chignon, hardly any make up, throw on my favorite pair of Seven jeans with my softest white T shirt, a touch of Shalimar, a Chanel Jacket and my Louboutin should do the trick...

Already salivating over the menu...

I cannot quite articulate my thoughts on "going forward" as I am too involved in the grueling facts of the present. I think I will seat quietly, enjoy the company and the food and listen...

F A O Schwartz:Design your own Muppet

Brilliant! Genius idea!
A couple of days ago, I met my dear friend Suzanne at F A O Schwartz on our way to visit her friend's new apartment on Park. Fabulous apartment, a New York dream...
Suzanne was designing a muppet for my favorite little man in the world, her son Asher.
I was enthralled and felt as if I had entered a world of childhood characters, or Santa workshop and I so badly wanted to be a kid again. The concept is ingenious, clear and simple, pure marketing brilliance, one only has to look at the line of mothers waiting to create a Muppet to capture the success story of the Muppet Whatnot workshop.

First, you pick the Muppet body and then pick the eyes, nose, hair, outfit. I watched, mesmerized as Asher's Muppet was coming to life. If you are a proud mother of a toddler, happens to live or travel through New York City, this is a must!!

Last minute shopping at Interieurs

I need to constantly remind myself how much I love Christmas! All the endless lists for the Christmas lunch arrangement, guest list, menu...my husband and I are not in agreement over the menu... I am threatening to cook! My poor guests if i have to actually live up to my threat... and the shopping! I have a gift for each guest, wrapped of course, plus gifts for family in France and in the US, Interieurs team, everyone who helps with my house from the housekeeping to gardening etc... I also need to add I have no patience standing in line. This past weekend was spent hopping from store to store shopping for gifts and bathroom tiles and accessories, bathtubs, sink... anything needed for a bathroom. A small guest bathroom needed fixing and ended up being gutted. I had one day to design the bathroom, layout the plan, specify all plumbing and electrical components and fixtures, all floor and wall covering by this morning.

All specs are ready, I kept it simple, white and modern... will show you the finished product when it is all done.

Meanwhile, I think I will finish my shopping are Interieurs! Enjoy my curated gift guide, hopefully my friends and guest will too...

I will admit I am a Saks shopper. We have a smaller Saks in Greenwich and all my favorite designers are under one roof, Prada now on Sale.... that is a really tough call...it is going to take all my willpower to resist... after all, we only live once, we might as well enjoy it and go for it!

Meanwhile, I just loved their windows which totally embraced my design sensibility, the rough utilitarian with the beautiful, glamorous sophisticated. Hope you enjoy!

I am in a mood to party.... in grand style of course!

The invitation of the season! I am absolutely thrilled to be invited to Tina's magnificent new home for a Holiday Celebration on December 23rd... even though this is a virtual invitation... I just had the most fabulous time getting my outfit for the occasion.

Just flew back from France last night and made a little detour via Paris. From the CDG airport went directly to my favorite designer Loris Azzaro whose couture house I have been faithful to for years. I had once been invited to an imperial wedding in Japan and trusted Loris Azzaro for the perfect dress. Ever since I run to him for any special occasion. The evening affair at Tina's is certainly a reason to visit his Studio.
Being in Paris for one day only, I had to be quick and decisive.

Here is the dress! I always wear black and love simple elegant dresses yet with a touch of sexi-glam

Of course the shoe is a detail that can make or kill an outfit. I decided on a Miu Miu little evening shoe.

New York being cold in December, I needed a coat. I trusted Valentino Couture House to have the perfect coat, in my size of course...

To accessorize the outfit, I will wear a vintage Cartier white gold and diamond watch, a simple Van Cleef and Arpels dragonfly pined on my dress as the only jewelry and my beloved crocodile bag that once belonged to my grand mother

Now, the subject of the hostess gift...

Tina's new home being a French Style Grand House , I felt that a little Lalique was appropriate.

I have known Linda for so many years and have had the privilege to work with her on several of my projects while she was the creative director at Metropolitan Home. New York Holiday glitter...Tiffany's fantasy windows

I love NewYork at Christmas time, the glitter, the fantasy, the rush, the crowds, New york is alive and in its full magical splendor.

I would not miss Tiffany's windows. Last year, I featured their window displays which were absolutely stunning in their details, the intricate art of paper sculpture. Once again, Tiffany's put up a splendid display of Carousels and created a marvelous fantasy land. Every year I can be a child again (even if just for few minutes)... Enjoy!

Perfect Imperfections: The doors of Zanzibar

Welcome to Stone Town, Zanzibar

In writing for my blog, I need to dig deep into my own persona: who am I, what do I really like and dislike, how do I live this passage of time that is life? A while ago, I worked with Sean Low who helped me define the process of running a creative business. This exercise was very personal as I needed to really understand and assess the core of my creative mind. In the end, it became evident that my design aesthetics are not about the expected perfection of an object, a piece of furniture or a space but quite the opposite. I need to feel a space, touch an object, to see and feel a piece of fabric, the texture of a chair or a table needs to stand on its own. The design of a piece of furniture or the inspiration for a new collection always comes to me from a part of the past, a discarded object or material, or even a few lines from a book.

It all came so clearly to me, what speaks to me, what I strive for in design and in my personal life is perfect imperfections. The essence of beauty seen, felt, breathed, touched... from this I will be writing a small series of jottings on perfect imperfections.

Hidden in the corner, I am indeed the lady in black

I will start with the doors of Zanzibar. I travelled all the way to Zanzibar, a rather small island off the coast of Tanzania to see its famous entry doors. The splendor of Oman's influence and its wealth is long gone, but what remains is a richness in history, texture, display of wealth, tortuous narrow streets, decayed gardens, ancient palaces and one's imaginations can go wild with visual stories of exotic days gone by.

For hours, I walked under tremendous heat in Stone Town's narrow streets, admiring, touching, watching the inhabitants of these houses go in and out via these magnificent doors. These doors are mute witnesses to the richness of the ancient Omani culture, beautifully sculpted in rare woods or sometimes just simple doors that evoke the terrible human suffering during the sordid times of slavery and far too often, death.

The doors with a chain design belonged to the slave traders. Zanzibar was once the main center for arab slave trading. The inhumanity of such men is almost palpable as one walks through the narrow street and enter some of the holding cells for enslaved men and women.

My imagination was running wild while looking at these remnants of past splendors

Very tempted to ship this one home!

Jeffrey Bilhuber: A book signing

The Showroom was ready, hors d'oeuvres laid out, the wine bar fully primed, sound equipment and projector fully tested, music on, RSVP growing by the minute... and then, as New York, a city full of surprises is prone to do, played a trick on us unloading a steady penetrating downpour from its very dark skies.

For you familiar with New York, treacherous rains in this city essentially mean the kiss of death for an event, no cabs to be found, traffic in full gridlock. Then Jeffrey arrived followed by a relative handful of some 40 hardcore New Yorkers who would not permit the elements to hinder their objective of meeting and listening to Jeffrey Bilhuber' talk about his latest book: The Way Home: Reflections on American Beauty.

I already knew Jeffrey as an immensely talented designer, but as I sat down to hear him talk about the book, design, history, I was totally taken back by his wealth of knowledge, his eloquence, his historical reference. Jeffrey is simply an amazing story teller, without fluff, he takes you through the core of his creative process, he shares his passion and love for design, his complete dedication to his craft and to his client and his great love of New York.

I felt elated, trusting my instinct , energized from his talk. Jeffrey is simply an extraordinary motivational speaker! His book is a must have.

I don't often feature my second home, INTERIEURS on my blog, as Art de Vivre is more an expression of myself, my likes and dislikes, my life as I live it. However, for the past 15 years, Interieurs is the chore of my work, an extension of my daily life. Aspirations and dream...by Invitation Only

Welcome to my dreams...

My first time being part of Marsha's group of gifted writers... Marsha as you may know is the incredibly talented blogger known as Splenderosa. It's early Saturday morning, coffee on my nightstand, sitting in bed, computer on my lap, I feel very intimidated to be part of such accomplished writers... Tish Jett, Greet, Vicky, Deborah..to name a few.

The subject is very dear to me ..."tell the world what you have always wanted to do or wish you could do, but just haven't done it yet "

I have reached the age of reflection, a time when I can look honestly at my life. I have been a very tough self critic, but with enough years behind me now, I am trying to be a little kinder to myself. This subject is touching a sore chord, very deep inside all the mixed emotions .

Frankly, I have wanted to do everything (except politics) ... see the world, fly airplanes, climb mountains, write a book, build my dream houses.... (yes, that's right, its Houses, not a typo) but feel that I have accomplished so little... My bucket list keeps growing and I can never hope to catch up!

Everest through my lens

I have a vision... following months if not years of preparations and training, I reached the summit of Everest. I feel the pain of breathing, every muscle screaming, the burning fear of the descent, the tears of joy, and the purest love of life. I would have survived the harshest conditions where life is so fragile that the wrong step, the slightest mistake, or simply bad luck will kill you.
I must have read nearly every mountaineering book, watched so many documentaries and lived vicariously through the great climbers. Listening to stories told by Peter Hillary during the evenings following our days trekking in Tibet, I would block out the world and live through his words, sometimes brutal,describing with such precision the harsh realities of mountain climbing.

Wake up! this is just a dream but isn't it fun to dream...

I feel so fortunate and thankful as I live my life fully, never looking back. As a young girl, I flew my airplanes, skied as if the devil was in me, and dreamed of America (Please keep in mind I was born in a village with fewer than 500 inhabitants in a remote beautiful part of France, Lot et Garonne)

I made it to America and many of my dreams and wishes have been fulfilled! I am blessed with a wonderful family and amazing friends. I love designing, gardening,hiking, skiing,reading... but most of all, love showing the world to my two sons. The Best Thing that happened in High Point....

For the past couple of years I have been visiting Market Week in High Point. Earlier on in my years as a furniture buyer for my showroom, I would not consider High Point as it was such an uninspiring environment compared to Maisons et Objets in Paris, or the Milan shows. Lately, I have been really impressed by the quality of merchandising and presentation. However, being familiar and aware of the other side of High Point, bankruptcies, factories closing, houses being foreclosed, I will not buy from companies that manufacture overseas, meaning in particular China. You may have read some of my previous posts on the subject. Add a great dose of knock offs (found my newest lighting collection totally copied to the smallest detail for a fraction a my cost)...I am going to put my lawyer husband to work on this one... and you have High Point. However, I have found and spoken to wonderful people who believe in the integrity of their designs, quality, manufacture locally or in other US States, or work with artisans from other parts of the world. These companies are involved in partnership with the artisans. I actually placed orders for a new bamboo made line of furniture hand made in South America.

I did not find much newness but as we all know it is rather difficult to reinvent oneself every 6 months and the lean budgets do not allow for new productions.

The highlight of the show...displays, attention to details, Hickory Chair showroom and meeting my dear college friend at their party after not seeing her for 30 years!! I was chatting away when someone called out my name, I turned and here stood Rosemarie. The weird thing is that she had found me through my blog and flying to High Point from South America where she lives, she kept telling her husband about us as students at Babson College.... there I was.

But the best thing that happened in High Point is an almost instant bonding friendship with Liz of Dovecote blog. I had reached out to Liz during the Spring High Point market. We met, had dinner and I saw Liz again during a party at my New York Showroom. Liz lives in a dreamy, beautiful french style house in Salem, with courtyard and a secret garden.Liz and her two beautiful daughters (her third girl being in Paris) opened their home to Greg (Interieurs furniture designer) and I ... I felt transported to a 5 star Relais et Chateaux". I slept in the most beautiful dreamy bedroom. Liz is a fabulous guide in High Point. She knows the market inside out. We went to book signing, parties and spent the evenings talking about books, children, life...in her beautiful and warm living room. This was the Highlight of High Point... my newly found friend whom, I feel, I have known for ever. I am convinced we were friends in a previous life.

A safari in Tanzania

My first time on a Safari. The word itself evokes romantic images out of a Karen Blixen novel.
Through a social network I belong to, ASW, I communicated with Joshua who runs a safari/travel outfit in Nairobi. He procured a Land Rover, retained the service and expertise of a great guide/driver and booked the various lodges I had selected. He met my husband in Kilimanjaro and drove to the lodge where Judy and I had just checked in, following our trek down the kilimanjaro mountain.
I was to experience the nature and wildlife of Africa.

Tarangire Reserve

I was in awe of the raw, simple beauty of the landscapes. Our first drive took us to one of my favorite place, Tarangire National Park. From our cabin on a plateau, we looked down onto a vast ravine and flat plain, teeming with life, elephants taking a rest, giraffes walking back and forth, wilderbeast going back and forth in very large groups, Giraffe drinking in the river. I was pinching myself, Is is this real? I felt as was looking at this extraordinary life in a fishbowl.

A safari is actually spent in a Land rover type car, with an open roof, and driving...lot's of driving...on the park's dirt roads in search of elusive animals and birds. But animal life is all around you, one can observe the social inter actions of the various type of animal. I could stare for hours and never tire of watching, feeling the hot dry air, listening to the sounds and birds singing.

We then drove to Ngorongoro Crater.From our lodge, cosy and high on top the largest crater in the world, 2000ft deep and covering 100 square miles, one could observe the crater plateau teeming with life where 25000 large animals live. The drive down to the crater was not for the faint of heart... i saw my first Lion and Rhinoceros.

The highlight of this Safari was the days spent in the Serengeti. The immensity of this dry, arid land is breathtaking. In the evening, resting on a chaise, watching the sunset, the only sounds were the ones of the animals settling in for the night or huntting. An elephant slowly passed right by me, eating his evening meal of tree bark, I could almost touch its trunk. I felt pure joy, absolute peace in this magical, perfect yet brutal land.

It was sad saying goodbye to Serengeti, but on we went to Manyara Reserve where thousands of Flamingos tinted the landscape in a soft pink tone.

Kilimanjaro: Mind over Body

A month is a long time... the sum of 30 days lived to the fullest.

From landing in the chaotic Kilimanjaro airport, my friend Judy and I started our trek on the stunningly beautiful Kilimanjaro mountain. I had no expectations, no agenda. Will I make it to the top? This was not even a question I asked myself, as I was striving for something else, something less tangible to take me away from a highly pressured, regulated life, a life that at times feels does not belong to me.

Why Kilimanjaro? I do love mountains and find an inner peace and a sense of belonging to something greater while in the mountains. Kilimanjaro is an extraordinary mountain where in the course of ascending to its summit, you experience every climate, from rain forests alive with birds, monkeys, flowers, scents, to heather landscapes, dry rocky ground, and finally glaciers and snow.

The experience of walking for hours on unfriendly terrain, trekking poles in hand or hugging the sheer face rocks while climbing a frighteningly huge cliff and the grueling last 11 hours that will take you, one step and one breath at the time to the top of this magical mountain.

The magic comes from within as the top itself is pretty grey and dreary. The magic is the experience, the incredible power of one's mind to push, control the body, refuse to despair, accepting what is handed to you at that moment... aches, fatigue, feeling sick and dizzy, the conflicting tears of both brutal pain and joy.

The magic of meeting the most generous and kind people who have nothing, not even the right shoes, no socks but will give you their unconditional support, help, smiles, will dance and sing with you.

This is pure magic! Alone with my thoughts at night, tucked in my sleeping bag, I felt an inner peace, a quiet I had never experienced. I thanked God for every day offered to me. I will never take any sunrise or sunset for granted, this is the incredible gift of life.

And yes, I did make it to the top...

Day 1: entering the forest via the Lemocho route. Lemocho is the longuest and the most difficult routedue to challenging steeper terrain,but ideal for anyone confident on their ability to deal with steep long 5 to 8 hours hikes a day. It is considered scenically the most beautiful route due to the variations of the landscape and nature and also the most isolated route as hardly anyone approaches Kilimanjaro via this route. Judy and I felt the mountains was ours as, until the very lasts days, no other trekkers crossed our path. The ultimate way to take in this remarkable mountain.

Day 7: On summit day, hardly slept from stress, up before sunrise, could not eat, could not drink...but in awe of the beautiful sunrise above the clouds at 17,000 feet

Ready to go! average timing 11 hours, made it in 7 hours up, then 3 more hours on a grueling descent. was totally sick, dizzy from dehydration and altitude, felt my head was literally going to explode.

Our guide had to help rescue one poor soul (about half my age..) that was just sitting on the path, unable to move. Needless to say, that gave me the last booster i needed, I was going to make it up and down on my own 2 legs...

Day 8: On our last descent day, we had a very emotional parting with our porters. saying goodbye was a teary moment as we hugged and kissed everyone (keeping in mind no one had properly washed in 8 days...). Judy and I gave everything away, our clothes, rain gear, socks, shoes, gloves, medical supplies. We asked everyone for what they needed most and left with a very long list of shoe sizes, clothes sizes, backpacks needed. We left with a promise that we will make a tiny improvement in their life (other than the tips handed down during our goodbyes).

We ended our trek with a well deserved bottle of champagne, said goodbye to Joseph and Hussein, our guides and enjoyed the most blissful shower back at our lodge.

Could not wait for Luke to join me and embark on our Safari.

Saying Goodbye To Summer!

I'm very excited to greet Francine's readers, this week it's Ania Palermo, a guest blogger filling in for those adventurous shoes. Francine has successfully completed her climb of Mt.Kilimanjaro and called from a satellite phone to let us know she's alive and well and we were very excited to hear her African adventure is exactly just that.

But here in New York, as we are dealing with deadlines, project installations, coming up with new products for the fall, we haven't even noticed when Fall has taken our summer days away from us. The Burberry trench coats have came up, the good ol' New York trick of switching out the wardrobe for the new season, is already in full swing as temperatures have dropped to 49 at night time. But facing the cold months ahead, just hasn't entered our minds as summer hasnt quite left us.

We've hosted editors, bloggers, dear friends and clients on our terrace and welcome many more next spring and summer.

But for now, welcome Fall! For now, we'll transform the terrace with heat lamp and some outdoor sculptures and see if some brave souls will brave colder months with some spiced apple cider.

As I'm packing my art supplies and my yoga mat for a retreat in rural Pennsylvania as New York is drenched in record rainfall, I'm looking forward to hearing the rain drops in a more serene setting.

Inspiration: African

I am fascinated by artists and the creative process. Is a designer an artist? not quite, I would never be conceded to the point of viewing myself as an artist. However, I feel that the source of great design comes from the core of one's creativity and emotions.

My approach to design is not a calculated one, it comes from pure instinct. Indeed, my training was in finance, I cannot draw, sketch, nor use CAD... but I have an innate sense for form, color, proportions, texture, and space.

I do not sit at a desk and start drawing a furniture collection, rather I may be reading a novel, looking at an art book, observing nature or be in a foreign land, and it suddenly hits me....this is it!
This is exactly what happened last fall. I was reading a marvelous book, Cutting for Stone, whose story took place in Ethiopia. I felt transported to a beautiful harsh world full of contrasts. I was reading in my Living Room, and started to look closely at an antique Ethiopian Tombom I had acquired years ago, and for the first time noticed all the intricacies in its rough carvings. That was it... my next collection would be inspired by this one artifact.

Today, I cannot look at a fashion magazine without noticing that African style is in!!

Saturday, I will be flying off to Africa for close to a month. My friend Judy and I will be hiking up the African sacred mountain Kilimanjaro with a guide and a couple of porters, sleeping in tents for 10 days as we are taking the long route to the summit. My husband will then meet me for a "safari'' through various Tanzanian parks, and finally off to Zanzibar where I hope to find small interesting artifacts and furniture for my showroom Interieurs, and finally to Pemba Island for some rest and swimming. As I am reading "Memoirs of an Arabian Princess from Zanzibar", I feel transported to a vision of Oman and Zanzibar . I hope to capture some of the scents, traditions, architecture of these times gone by.

Hopefully, my Interieurs team will keep the blog going with (I hope) a few guest posts.

As August came to a close, I was able to escape New York summer heat and drive with husband, sons and friends to our beloved Maine family island.

I treasure every moment spent on this stunningly beautiful island, with its sandy beach, magnificent woods, amazing rock formations and the most spectacular moss species (moss post to follow!). I love taking long early morning and late afternoon walks, camera in hand of course. To my bewilderment, I spotted a bald eagle, rather rare and highly protected (a mere possession of a bald eagle feather can cost a $25000 fine!)

Ever since the early days of Interieurs, we have had a faithful following of celebrities. Cult celebrity and obsession is not my thing... Famous or not famous, every customer is treated with the same respect and level of service. I have been asked to close the showroom while a certain "famous celebrity " would be shopping, which I would automatically refuse. From Julia Roberts, Gwyneth Paltrow to Bon Jovi and numerous others, I have met artists of all types. Half the time, I actually am clueless as to who they are.
One event I clearly remember though, is when Hilary Swank was in the process of furnishing her apartment. She purchased most pieces from us and did make quite a few visits to our showroom with and without her designer. I love to talk to creative people about their craft, and so ended up spending the entire afternoon talking with her about passion, her childhood, poverty, perseverance and its rewards. She truly touched my heart.

In this issue of Elle Decors, Courtney Cox's house is featured, modern, airy with a twist. A client just mentioned to me yesterday that he noticed Jose Esteves light in the entry shot. I thought I would share this with you. Jose being my favorite interieurs artist, I was very pleased.

A wedding...behind the scenes

My dining room turned into a floral workroom

As an Interior Designer, I am often called to create environments that incorporate all facets of design and creativity. I love rising to a challenge that is usually outside of my expertise. In such instances, I often advise clients on travel places, art, collecting artifacts, build book collections to fill in bookshelves with themes that will be of interest to them. I also have been collecting books on landscaping, gardening and suggest clients ideas for landscaping, pool, outdoor structures, and type of cut flower gardens. To complete an installation, I arrange flower displays to welcome clients to their newly designed home.

I have enormous respect for event planners as everything must be timed and done perfectly as you are not given the opportunity for a second chance. The stress level is even more intense than working on a client installation. This was the case for Estera's wedding (see previous post). I thought my checklist was a perfection...arrangement samples presented and approved by the future bride, vases ordered, flowers specified, counted and ordered with just enough time for them to open to perfection on the wedding day. Well, I forgot one element...the weather. How could I have forgotten about the weather? The last wedding I hosted in my house for my best friend, took place during a hurricane, which flooded my courtyard with 10" of water.

This time around, no rain in sight but 105 degrees temperature. The flowers did not like the relocation from the refrigerated storage to our house. For 3 days, we lived with sweaters on and the AC running at full blast. Nevertheless, we endured serious casualties. Mercifully, I had ordered quite a few extra dozens of roses.
Once in the location, the whirlwind started, petals from roses that opened far too fast were strewn over tables. The centerpieces were arranged at home with my friend Judith, a master gardener and flower designer extraordinaire with serious experience in weddings. The tall arrangements were done on site, then last minute improvisation for chairs placement, and every detail that did not work as planned due to wind and heat during the outdoor ceremony.

It all worked out in the end, the bride and her mother stunningly beautiful, the groom elegant and happy and we all celebrated such a dear beautiful couple happiness and danced the night away.

Estera is getting married...

I am blessed to work with such a tight wonderful team. When it all started, I was the only married one at Interieurs, then Krista tied the knot, Interieurs team celebrating with her on her grand wedding day, followed by Greg and Victor who pronounced their vows in my living room, an intimate warm, elegant wedding on a December snowy night. Our intern even chose to elope to return to Interieurs as Mrs....

Ania, our marketing wizard came to Interieurs as a rather new bride.

I have worked with Estera for quite a few years and followed her path from being a young intern, fresh out of school, shy, quiet, to this beautiful, smart and talented woman who has risen to the sometimes thankless job of being project manager. Estera loves life, beauty, her family, friends and everything about her showed on her wedding day. She and Will planned the entire event on a beautiful quaint farm and I felt privileged to have shared with her all the small steps.

My contribution was to make all her flower arrangements and supervise the decors... well, it turned out to be a bit more, as I was referred to by guest as ...the wedding planner?? no, the caterer...oh dear no, I can't even boil an egg, so "what are you then, the farm girl? one guest desperate to find his table asked me... that I really am at heart, a farm girl...my good customer service training kicked in really fast, and my answer to everyone question was...hold that thought! I will get you that chair, here sir you may sit in the shade...it is only 105 degrees today...yes, I will be happy (in my sinking stiletto heels) to move all the chair from the sunny side to under that tree... here is a fan...the bride...she is almost here...

Color inspirations

Summer is a slow time in New York, which leaves me a little freedom to work on our fall new designs, materials, colors, etc.... I just recently had dinner with a Benjamin Moore creative executive, and with wine helping us, we had so many laughs and at the end of dinner we realized that we actually sat 3 hours at the table! A good thing I train it into town.

We talked about life, travel, opera, wine food and colors. It is so interesting to compare how one operates from a corporate environment compared to my approach of operating purely on my gut and fancy.

Days later, as I was going through powder coated finishes that we presented to a client, my eyes stopped on one color... I knew it! This is it! I became totally absorbed by this color, ran around the showroom in search of similar tones, found the perfect shag carpet sample from our Limited Edition Collection and the ultimate complimentary color in a pair of scissors. Inspiration cannot be planned, learned, scheduled or even called up on demand, it has more the character of a leap of faith.

I carry usually an Iphone or a small camera and just take snapshots of anything that speaks to me, especially colors. When traveling, my eyes are constantly roaming and scanning the scene.

I gravitate towards natural tones, greys, dark browns, soothing non aggressive colors which are reflected in my recent design works. It only took a dark, cold, brutal winter and a winter escape to the warm seas, et voila!

In our industry, the support of editorial is critical. I am an avid (borderline neurotic gardener) and have been reading Garden Design for years. My house was published a few years ago in the magazine, the story was about our new Interieurs collection. As a result, a new client called on me to redesign and furnish her nearby week end residence. I was thrilled when Katie Mendelson contacted me about our terrace which she had seen during one of our parties. Here is our outdoor space styled by Garden Design.

When I refer to the deck of my Brooklyn apartment, I use the term loosely;in truth, it is a dirty patch of tar roof. But after a trip to the design firm INTERIEURS on New York City's East 58th Street, I realized that with a few smart choices, even the most sharp-edged cityscapes can become an urban oasis.
When INTERIEURS'owner Francine Gardner relocated her showroom in 2010, she knew what she was after: "I wanted a place to meet with clients, to eat lunch, and to relax and entertain," she says. Inside, the breezy duplex showcases finds from four-poster beds to egg shaped lamps. But the piece de resistance is its 1,000 square foot terrace. Even penned in by office buildings, the terrace's currated mix of furniture and greenery is ripe for casual entertaining."it's quite unexpected in midtown manhattan,"Gardner notes.

A Rose story

I have a deep passion for roses. Ever since I was a little girl, I have always loved roses.

Shortly after being married, Luke and I purchased a farm in Marshfield, Massachusetts. The few acres surrounding the antique (1668) house, were a mangle of weeds, dead trees, uncared paddocks...a dream as I knew I would create my own little piece of paradise. It all started with a rose, the purest form and exquisite scent of the Isphahan rose.

Roses are said to be the most ancient flowers in existence. They were used for their medicinal value, their beauty and fragrance. Confucius (500BC) kept records of the roses in the imperial Garden of the chinese Emperor, Cleopatra was said to have her bed covered in rose petals, medieval monasteries were full of roses, especially red climbing roses as they represented the blood of Christ. Napoleon was so fond of roses that he allowed english rose seeds to be sent to his beloved Josephine, while at war with England.

As for me, I could not imagine my life without roses. By my bed, always a rose is present to bring calmness. Before sleeping, I apply a drop of rose oil behind my ears. I bathe in damask rose scented water which I bring back from Morocco.

In my garden, I have been collecting over the years, the most exquisite scented roses. Ancient roses have unfortunately a very short display, their blooms and fragrance are intoxicating. I treasure the month of June when all my antique roses display their soft colors and release their extraordinary fragrance.

In my garden one would find Damask roses ( Isphahan, Madame Hardy,Red Damask)...Alba roses (Alba maxima being my favorite, Amelia, Blanche de Belgique, Celeste, Crimson Blush, Parmentier, tender Blush)...Gallica roses (Adele Prevost, Aurelia, Poupre Violette, Camaieaux)...Moss rose ( Alfred de damas, Gloire d'Orient)...Centifolia roses (Cabbage rose, Fanfan Latour,Rubra)...Portland roses (Comte de Chambord, Jacques Cartier, Duchesse of Portland.

A week end in France...Saint Jean de Luz

Through my blog, I try to show you lesser known parts of France and hopefully inspire you to visit and immerse yourself in the local culture, architecture and history.

I just returned from a long week end visiting my parents in France. I had booked ahead of time two nights in a wonderful hotel: Le Grand Hotel in Saint Jean de Luz where we celebrated my parents' birthdays.

Saint Jean de Luz is located near Biarritz in the Basque country where Spain meets France.
Here Louis XIV, known as the Sun King married Marie Theresa, the Infanta of Spain on June 13, 1660.

A fishing port, Saint Jean de Luz is famous for its architecture, sandy bay, its cuisine and the quality of light as well as its micro climate. On a less cultural note, the shopping is fabulous! The many boutiques cater to an all year around and summer clientele... fabulous fashion and home accessories.

Le Grand Hotel, entirely re-designed is truly a gem with outstanding service, beautiful decors, amazing cuisine, perfectly located on the water to watch the sunsets. Of course, I had to try out the spa, an experience not to be missed.

Running on the endless trails along the cliffs amidst nature was a real treat. The occasional german concrete "pillboxes" are reminder of the terrible years the residents endured during World War II. The town was an important waypoint in the escape routes French resistors used to help escaping Jews pass through the Pyrenees into Spain.

The Basque country side, in all its lushness and raw beauty is a delight to travel through. A must stop (if you are lucky enough to find it) is the famous Auberge Daguin. Travel and Leisure has other resources here.

The meaning of Travel

I was once asked why do I love to travel. My answer was quite direct: I travel because I have to.

I travel, not so much to be inspired, but to explore cultures and feel nature's overpowering scale. I feel at home in foreign environments, absorbing what does not exist in my daily life. The landscapes help me to dream and often my travels are driven from the pages I read.

My favorite subject while in school in France was geography, I would stare at my globe and dreamed of foreign lands while my friends would play with their Barbie dolls...and I read, I devoured Jules Verne stories, read the great russian classics, dreaming of white russian landscapes, discovered Italy through Stendhal, my mind travelled through Burma with Georges Orwell and... I discovered Marc Twain.

From that day on, I knew I would end up in America.

His powerful sentence..."travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow mindedness" marked me for ever, and by these standards I brought up my children. Growing up in France, in catholic school, one does not develop very broad horizon and my friends' way of thinking, expectations of life, almost archaic cast system in Bourgeois society were stifling. My parents always encouraged me to be myself and were the support that enabled me to break away from the standard mold. When I wanted to fly, my father brought me to our small local airport, I was only 15 and he said...go for it, and I learned how to fly, alone in my plane I felt an amazing sense of being alive, free to take my life in any direction I wanted. And I did.

Through travel, I feel that I succeeded in at least one thing with my children, they are not afraid of life, of taking risks, they are amazingly generous young men, their friends come from all walks of life and they hold no judgements. As a working mother, I often talk to them and ask if they missed out on their childhood by having both parents away during the day. Their answers are always positive, and in listening to them, our travels have been an amazing part of who they are, a part they hold on to and relish.

Re-reading George Orwell while cruising the mighty Irrawaddy river, Luke and the boys for an early sunrise. We were profoundly touched by this country, land of gentle people caught in a brutal regime

In Borneo, my children learned how to cope with nature, understand the fragility of natural rainforest in the hands of men and greed, and came to love Orangutans. Climbing the ironwood trunk ladder to spend the night with a Dayak family. An impromptu visit after reading Paul Theroux.

I love being surrounded by younger people, my advise to them...go out in the world, explore, start with your own neighborhood and open your eyes, you will be amazed how much you have missed.

It's wedding bells time!!!

It seems that it was yesterday that I said yes to this charming fun loving handsome young man that completely swept me off my feet...We were married on May 16th at his beautiful family house in Brooline, Massachusetts..... a month later on June 16th, we said yes in God's 12th century church in my village of Clermont Dessous, France. I had met Luke by pure chance just a few months prior.

It has been an amazing journey ever since, with bumps and laugh's, tears and joy, adventures, simple pleasures of watching my children grow, constantly being put to the test, but never, dull, boring. I have never taken any day for granted and always thankful for this extraordinary gift of life.

This is the month of wedding bells and the time for the future brides and grooms to receive tokens of love from family and friends...Newlywish, crated and designed by the beautiful, smart, talented Amanda Allen is the perfect registry for traditional and creative, one of a kind gifts.

We were very pleased to be asked by Amanda to be part of Newly Wish...I always have a soft spot for future brides...my first assistant planned her wedding seating next to my desk, I hosted our head designer Greg's wedding in our house,which took place on a perfect snowy evening. My dearest friend in the world Suzanne was married on the grounds of my house...a stunningly beautiful enchanting wedding. She looked like a dream and silly me, exhausted from the stress of preparation, would cry everytime I would look at her.

Presently, Estera our project manager is engaged to marry her long time fiance Will in a beautiful country farm....I'll try my very best with decoration and flower arrangements...

So it is really fit and appropriate that this hopeless romantic blogger should be part of a bridal registry
And this is no ordinary bridal registry, it so interesting and fun that you do not even need to be a bride. Anytime a gift is needed, just leave the site open on your husband's / boyfriend's / girlfriend's computer.... hint...

ICFF... The International Contemporary Furniture Fair

I have never missed the ICFF in New York, a must for architects, designers or anyone for that matter who is passionate for contemporary design. I even showed my Interieurs Collection a few years in a row at the ICFF. This show is not about selling volume, mass market, knock offs, playing it safe. This show is about creative design, going out on a limb and showing the best you've got! I admire the young brave artists who dare to be different.
On sunday, I discovered a fantastic lighting designer from Brooklyn and will set up a meeting to discuss working with her, I placed a fairly large order on ecologically safe non vent outdoor and indoor fireplaces and worked the Limited Edition booth, meeting potentially new clients. I carry Limited Edition rugs in my showroom, by far my favorite rugs on the markets with endless possibilities to design your own rug as well. Limited Editions won the Best Award for carpet and flooring at this year's exhibitions...Congratulations are in order!

I (or should I say Ania, Interieurs party planner extraordinaire...on her way to entertain more clients in Las Vegas) gave a party for the winners of last year Best Design on our terrace, where they invited potential clients to view their favorite pieces in context.

A stroll through Paris...a personal journey

I was very honored when Christina of Greige Design suggested that I could be a guest blogger while she enjoys time away. Blogging has become a very personal journey as I am able to share ideas, design inspirations, travel stories via words and images, an electronic common place book of sorts. My blog Francine Gardner Art De Vivre is a synopsis of who I am, someone who just loves family, life, nature, far away cultures and brings all these experiences into my design work.
I left the South West of France at the age of 18 to study in United States (Boston), a country that has fascinated me to the point that I am now a US citizen. But I will always love PARIS. I believe if there is a "place one must see before you die", please make it Paris.

You may, if you wish, follow me on my stroll through my favorite part of this extraordinary city.
Arrive early morning at the small Lenox Hotel on Rue de l'Universite in Saint Germain where I always stay, shower, clean clothes and off I start my free day before meetings, shows etc.. breakfast at Cafe Flore where wealthy locals and tourists meet to chat , see and be seen. Then a long magnificent walk along the Seine to my favorite museum, Musee du Quai Branly.

Cross the Seine and heads to the Musee de l'Orangerie where all walls of two large rooms are covered with massive canvases of Monet Water Lillies. A profound beautiful experience not to be missed.

Keep walking through gardens and enjoy a well deserved lunch on the terrace of Cafe Marly, overlooking the Louvre.
Then on to some shopping, all Streets of Saint Germain are filled with art galleries and boutiques but I always end up at the Bon Marche, their food emporium is a treat to all senses, their hip women's fashion department irresistible, let's not mention the shoes....there, you see french women at work...shopping.
Back to the Flore for a chevre chaud, dinner at one of my favorite restaurants, alone or with friends, then, my nightly walk, through Place de Furstenberg, magical at night, getting lost in the small streets of the quartier latin and crossing the bridge to Isle Saint Louis. Along the way, I spend hours browsing the shelves of the bookstores which stay open until midnight. The french love to read... I usually end up buying boxes of books that I ship back to New York.
My free day is over, off to sleep.

When envisioning an artistic collection made of unique sculptures, I always reach deep inside my soul. I feel a very strong connection with nature.Trees, birds, animals, flowers are my sanctuary. I then convey these inspirations and feelings to Jose during our one meeting, usually held in Paris, in this instance, over dinner at the fabulous restaurant Lilly-Wang. The sketching begins in a Picasso fashion. As I express my vision and intentions for the collection, Jose starts sketching. Birds, trees, everything that my mind tries to express is brought to life via Jose's hand and pen.

I will not unveil the collection yet but will share our creative process from concept to final installation.

Design Purgatory...Knock offs

I returned last week from a couple of days spent at High Point market in North Carolina.
The highlight of the trip was meeting the charismatic, energetic resourceful and wonderful Liz of Dovecote Decor. She introduced me to the rural beauty of Salem, where she resides and wrote the most detailed review of this spring market, highlighting some great resources. http://dovecotedecor.blogspot.com/

I even purchased a fairly large whimsical and utterly impractical antique Dovecote...slight problem, in my excitement, I handed my credit card but have no recollection as to the name of the seller...my dovecote is sitting in High Point, waiting to be shipped to its occasionally ditsy owner.

This is not the one I purchased, mine is far larger and can house an extended family of doves

Onto the real topic of this post...

Please allow me to VENT !! One downer about trade show is the usual lack of creativity and the knock offs staring at you. I cannot tell you how tired I am of these manufacturers who do not come up with one single original thought nor design, go around showrooms and stores that invest in creative talent and shameless as they are, just steal their design. to me this is theft, theft of creativity, originality, endless hours and efforts put into creating an original pieces.

I have been on the receiving end of this type of highway larceny. A few years ago, my showroom and brand name Interieurs made front page of the Design section of the New York Times, its title: where do Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn and the likes go shopping?...at Interieurs

Most copies are made overseas which takes labor away from talented american craftmen. One day, I may go into details of what I have seen in China, and cried in Vietnam at the sight of young children taking batteries apart in dark, humid airless rooms

One of the worst offenders are the likes of Design Within Reach who have in previous years blatantly produced mid-century pieces and other modern furniture without a licence.

I will pass on the list of culprits. Just the other day, a designer made our relentless efforts to be creative so worthwhile. As her client commented on having seen the proposed desk and chandelier in Restoration hardware, the designer looked at her (without noticing that I was within earshot) and exclaimed...absolutely not, I would never settle for anything else but the original.

Please, help keep design, originality, alive, do not settle for cheap copies. I do understand budgets, but if you cannot stretch for the real things, go to a different source, shop around and have fun in the process. There is a lot of fresh original designs and talents at reasonably prices out there, all they need is an audience!

A Winter Escape - Islamorada Key

Enough of snow, sleet, cold, and a state of overwork exhaustion. I just needed a quick break to recharge the emotional and physical batteries.

My husband and I decided to visit his brother in Palm Beach. Breathtakingly beautiful, pristine with an almost too perfect quality, Palm Beach is a true respite from busy cold New York. However as my branding phrase...I love perfect imperfection... I needed a more exotic, real venue to let go of worries and fatigue.

On to Tablethotels.com (my favorite hotel search engine) and a last minute booking at Casa Morada on Islamorada Key that, apparently, just had a cancelation. After a drive and walk through the Everglades... (I had to see a gator!) we arrived at the well hidden Casa Morada. I suddenly felt light, free of worries and happy as a young child. This was everything I had hoped for, a secluded week end in a most informal yet perfectly designed boutique hotel, on the water.

I will let my pics speak for themselves but in 2 days I enjoyed myself more than I have in quite a long time... I swam in the ocean, freshened up in the pool, snorkeled, went biking, suntanned, ate exquisitely prepared fish two nights in a row at Pierre's restaurant (part of the Morada Bay Cafe complex).

If you are in need of a little "TLC" go and check out this little spot on the Floridian Gulf Coast. You won't be disappointed.
